I believe the logs are cypress, and the chalk marks are the estimated board feet in the log (evidently work stopped if somebody showed up with a camera). Picture was made in the Sipsey swamp.

This looks like it was made about the same time as the upper photo. The old crane has what looks like a wood boom. Those are some mighty big logs.
